Severe weather risk upgraded for north Alabama; tornado watch issued, with ‘strong’ tornadoes possible - AL.com

Keep an eye on the skies today. Severe weather will be possible this afternoon and tonight in north and part of central Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.

And the Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the severe weather risk for part of north Alabama today, raising it to “enhanced," which is level 3 out of 5.

An enhanced risk means “numerous” severe storms will be possible.

Everything is on the table today, especially for north Alabama, including damaging winds, heavy rain, hail and tornadoes. Some of those tornadoes could be strong, forecasters said.

The Storm Prediction Center said the most favorable area for tornadoes will be closer to the Tennessee border this afternoon through the evening.

The SPC has issued a tornado watch for all of north Alabama and a few counties in north-central Alabama. It will be in effect until 10 p.m.:

The SPC said few tornadoes are “likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible” this afternoon.

Storms could also contain wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Forecasters said that between 5 and 7 p.m. “this probably will include potential for supercells capable of producing tornadoes, particularly near/northeast of Tupelo, Miss., into areas near and northwest of Muscle Shoals, Huntsville and the Shelbyville, Tullahoma area of southern middle Tennessee.”

The Alabama counties in the watch are Cullman, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall, Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lamar, Marion and Winston.

North Alabama had a round of heavy rain and storms this morning, resulting in multiple flash flood warnings for the region, which have since expired. More storms are expected to develop later today ahead of a cold front, according to the weather service.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the entire northern half of Alabama under a severe weather risk for storms expected to develop this afternoon.

Areas in extreme north Alabama including Huntsville, Decatur, Muscle Shoals and Florence have been upgraded to an enhanced risk.

Areas from there southward to roughly Birmingham have a slight risk, which means scattered severe storms will be possible.

Areas south of Birmingham but north of Montgomery will have a marginal risk, which means severe storms will be possible but will be more isolated.

There is no severe weather risk for south Alabama, and most areas should stay dry today.

Community storm shelters may come into play today for some areas.

The weather service released a statement earlier this week on what those that rely on community shelters should do in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic:

There will be continue to be concerns about flooding today in north Alabama.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center thinks there will be a moderate risk of flash flooding for parts of Alabama today.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a flash flood watch for much of north Alabama.

The watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday and includes these counties: Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb.

The weather service said most of the Tennessee Valley will get between 1 and 2 inches through late tonight, and because the soil is still saturated it may not take much to cause flooding.

The cold front is expected to weaken as it moves deeper into Alabama, according to the weather service. And there’s no big cool down expected behind it. In fact, highs on Wednesday will be similar to today, with 70s expected in north Alabama and low to mid-80s forecast for south Alabama:

Wednesday highs

Highs on Wednesday won't be all that different despite a cold front moving in today.
