Severe drought quadruples in North Carolina, now spread across 12 western counties - WLOS

The drought across North Carolina continues to worsen, as the U.S. Drought Monitor's updated information released Thursday, Nov. 2, shows the area considered to be in a "severe drought" has more than quadrupled since last week.

According to the map of N.C. released Thursday, 32% of the state is now in a severe drought, with the majority of that area taken up by Western North Carolina. Just one week ago, 7% of N.C. was considered to be in severe drought. The majority of the rest of the state is considered to be in a moderate drought.

SEVERE DROUGHT HITS FOUR NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES WITH CONDITIONS SET TO WORSEN, OFFICIALS WARN

Last week, parts of four WNC counties were in a severe drought. In one week's time, that has increased to include nine western counties: Rutherford, Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, Transylvania, Macon, McDowell and Swain.

Far western counties are also completely in a severe drought: Cherokee, Clay and Graham.

Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Transylvania and Macon counties are completely engulfed in the severe drought, while the majority of Buncombe County is still considered in the moderate drought category, as is Jackson County.

Henderson County continues to be in a Stage 2A water shortage alert, in which all 80,000 of Hendersonville's water customers are expected to reduce their normal water usage by 20% until the restriction is lifted. The water shortage there began in August when Hendersonville officials issued a Stage 1 voluntary advisory.

News 13 spoke with business owners in Hendersonville about the water restrictions, and though none of them would go on camera, they all said they are taking precautionary measures to conserve water, such as using smaller cups, but most of them said there's not much more they can do.

It has also been one month since the town of Tryon issued a voluntary water restriction order for its residents.

Buncombe County officials have issued a burn ban through Friday, Nov. 3, as dry and windy conditions persist.
