Alabama will have a chance of seeing a few severe storms early next week, according to forecasters.
It is the first time Alabama has had the possibility of severe weather in the forecast for quite a while. And Alabama has entered what is known as its “secondary” severe weather season.
According to data from the National Weather Service, November is the third most active month for tornadoes statewide. No. 1 on the list is the month of April, and No. 2 is March.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has outlined an area in western and central Alabama to watch for the potential for severe weather next Monday (see the map at the top of this post).
The National Weather Service said a strong storm system is expected to move from southwest to northeast across Alabama from Monday night into Tuesday morning. Some of the storms it brings along with it could be strong to severe.
The weather service said damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph will be possible, along with hail and isolated tornadoes.
However, the system could also bring some much-needed rainfall to Alabama, which is in the midst of its worst drought since 2016.
The seven-day rainfall outlook from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center shows Alabama could get an inch or more of rain over the next week, which will not get rid of the drought but could help it from getting any worse.
The weather service said drier and cooler conditions are expected after Tuesday.
