A chance for severe storms returns to western Nebraska late in the work week.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has placed western Nebraska, northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming into a slight risk for severe weather Thursday.
Storms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon and move their way east across the area.
The NWS office in Cheyenne says some of the scattered storms will likely be severe, producing wind gusts in excess of 60 miles-per-hour and large hail.
The Nebraska panhandle is in a marginal risk area for excessive rainfall or flash flooding on Thursday. The NWS says it only takes about an inch or two of rain in a short period of time to create flash flooding concerns. In burn scar areas, it could take as little as a half-inch.
The rainfall would be appreciated by many in the panhandle, as western Nebraska has recently been plagued by large grass and wildfires, including a blaze Tuesday evening that required 17 departments to respond.
In recent weeks, crews were also kept busy by the Hackberry and Cross fires in Banner County.
