ALERT: FIRST ALERT DAY - Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 1 AM - WOWT

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Clusters of thunderstorms are likely to develop in central Nebraska after 7pm Saturday evening and move east through the early overnight hours. Within those clusters, strong to severe storms are possible. This has prompted a First Alert Day in our area for Saturday, August 7th.

9:15 PM -- Severe thunderstorms continue to track east through the Omaha Metro with heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, wind gusts up to 70 mph, and quarter-size hail. A Flash Flood Warning has been issued from David City to Omaha through 3 AM due to rainfall rates of 3 to 4 inches per hour!

7:45 PM UPDATE: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for all of the counties in yellow until 1 AM. A few isolated severe storms fired up near David City with up to ping-pong ball sized hail and wind gusts of 60 mph. More storms have fired up in south-central Nebraska into Kansas.

We’ve been tracking hit and miss showers and storms throughout the day Saturday, but these have so far remained below severe limits. Regardless - when thunder roars (regardless of severe status), head indoors!

Severe Weather Outlook for Saturday evening
Severe Weather Outlook for Saturday evening(WOWT)

Though cloud cover and rain has kept the Omaha Metro in the lower-80s, highs have pushed into the 90s near the Kansas border and we’re ALL feeling the humidity. South-central and southeastern Nebraska look to have the best “ingredients” for severe weather late this evening, so we’ll be paying close attention to these specific areas.

Storms will have a large hail potential once they first fire up; our storm threats will then transition to gusty winds and localized heavy rain. An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out either with the onset of storms. Storms will likely push into the metro area later in the evening, generally after 9pm.

Isolated heavy downpours will be possible as well with some 1-3″ rain totals showing up in areas that end up with the strongest storms. Overall I would expect most of the storm activity to be east and out of the area no later than 2 AM leaving us with quieter conditions the rest of the night. Stay tuned for updates as the event approaches.
