Storms possible tonight; enhanced risk for severe weather on Tuesday - AL.com

Another round of severe weather rolled across Alabama today, and a severe thunderstorm watch continues for part of the state.

There’s an even better chance for storms statewide on Tuesday.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has most of Alabama in a severe weather risk of some sort for tonight.

Areas in south and central Alabama have a slight risk, which is Level 2 out of 5 and means scattered severe storms will be possible (see the map at the top of this post for today’s risk).

The rest of the state — except for parts of coastal Alabama — has a marginal risk. A marginal risk is Level 1 and means isolated severe storms will be possible.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been extended for part of Alabama until 10 p.m.:

The Storm Prediction Center said damaging wind gusts to 65 mph possible as well as Isolated large hail. A “tornado or two” will also be possible.

Forecasters said storms could be focused in two corridors: across east-central to central Alabama and farther south in southern Alabama.

Then on Tuesday there will be an enhanced risk, or Level 3, for all of north and most of central Alabama and a slight risk (Level 2) and marginal risk (Level 1) for parts of south Alabama.

Here’s Tuesday’s outlook:

Tuesday severe weather outlook

A large part of Alabama has an enhanced risk (Level 3 out of 5) for severe weather. All of the state could have to deal with strong to severe storms, however.

An enhanced risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.

But let’s look at today first.

Today’s storms could have damaging winds, hail and heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms will be possible through the day and into the nighttime hours.

Today feels like a summer preview, with humidity levels ramping up. That is helping to set off storms this afternoon.

The strongest storms could have damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

The threat for severe weather could increase on Tuesday, according to forecasters, with numerous severe storms possible across much of the state.

Rain and storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front.

There could be rain on and off during the day on Tuesday, but the best chances for bad weather will come during the afternoon and into the evening, according to the weather service.

All modes of severe weather will be on the table for Tuesday, including tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

The rain is expected to move out of the state on Wednesday, and drier and slightly cooler weather is in store for the last half of the workweek.
