Southeast Severe Weather Threat Tuesday and Wednesday - WeatherNation

A wide area has the potential to see severe thunderstorms in the southeastern sections of the nation Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, the area extends from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley and Cumberland Plateau. There is an enhanced risk (level 3 on a scale of 1 to 5) from around Nashville, Tennessee to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Damaging wind gusts above 58 mph are the main concern. A few tornadoes are likely in the late afternoon and early evening, along with large hail greater than an inch in diameter.

With high humidity from a rich wind flow from the Gulf of Mexico, thunderstorms have the potential to produce very heavy rainfall. More than 3″ are possible, bringing a threat for flooding.

Thunderstorms will be ongoing ahead of a cold front through the morning and midday Tuesday. With increasing instability in the afternoon, severe thunderstorms will develop with some becoming supercells capable of high winds and tornadoes. The hail threat will diminish throughout the day.

There is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Wednesday as the system moves eastward. The threat for severe thunderstorms shifts from the Middle Atlantic to the Big Bend of Florida as the cold front slides towards the Atlantic Ocean.
