New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton says he’s not playing through pain, and that his abdomen injury is not impacting his ability to throw the football.

Newton was listed as limited (abdomen) on the injury report for the last two weeks, which has included five practices.

The quarterback’s comments run contrary to a report from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer during a pregame broadcast on Thursday Night Football during the Los Angeles Rams’ 24-3 win over the Patriots.

“I am told that in fact he has been struggling with that abdominal injury,” Glazer said, as transcribed by WEEI’s Ryan Hannable. “It’s caused him an awful lot of pain for the last couple of weeks here, but because they have the short week they forced him to rest, and as of a result of that today he felt better than he has the last few weeks.”

Newton finished the night completing 9 of 16 passes for 119 yards and an interception with four sacks for a loss of 21 yards. He had seven carries for 16 yards. New England benched Newton for Jarrett Stidham with roughly nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Stidham finished 5 of 7 for 27 yards while taking two sacks.

Though Newton struggled in Week 14 — and at many other points during the season — the Patriots intend to stick with him at quarterback, Bill Belichick told reporters after the game. New England kicks off against the Miami Dolphins in Week 15 against the Dolphins in Miami.
