THE GLOBAL POPULATION WILL LIKELY SLOW DOWN BY 2064, NEARLY FOUR DECADES EARLIER THAN THE UNITED NATIONS FORECASTED
(CNN) – The global population could be peaking well before the end of the century.
A study, published in the Lancet found that the global population could peak at 9.7 billion in 2064 and then fall to 8.8 billion by 2100.
The United Nations had forecasted the population would stop growing by 2100, with a peak of nearly 11 billion people.
One reason behind the slowed growth is access to modern contraception and education of girls and women.
The study also found that elderly would make up a bigger chunk of the total population.
And 23 countries including Japan, Italy, and Spain could shrink their population by more than half.
