Strong winds in excess of 75 mph are expected to accompany a fast-moving storm that is expected to move through the Grand Forks area as early as 7 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.
"That is the main concern with this," said NWS meteorologist Carl Jones. "There are ingredients in place that this could be a significant windy event."
Straight-line winds in the evening could reach 100 mph, NWS predicted. Hail is expected to be about 2 inches in diameter. There will be a tornado threat, also.
At 2:45 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 39 miles northwest of Devils Lake, moving east at 55 mph. NWS warned "this is a very dangerous storm," with 80-mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter, and mobile homes will be heavily damaged. Expect considerable damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles. Extensive tree damage and power outages are likely.
"During this period when we have a lot of people outdoors ... that being campers setting up for the night ... we do want to urge that they take these warnings seriously. They should have a plan in place," Jones said. "A safe shelter is not your recreational vehicle."
With the potential of seeing significant winds, Jones said residents should not be surprised if warnings of 80 mph or higher thresholds to be issued.
"We are not anticipating for flooding to be in the forefront of threats," Jones said as the speed in which the storms will move should mitigate the amount of rainfall to 1 to 2 inches.
Though the storms were in the Bismarck area around 1 p.m., the line is expected to grow stronger as it moves east.
"We are not anticipating the storm to weaken as it enters Minnesota," Jones said.
