Jason Gough's forecast: Scattered showers could lead to severe weather - Times Union

An uninvited and "unforecasted" cluster of storms decided to fire up and spread south yesterday afternoon, throwing a lot of lightning and directing its wind to bring down some trees.

While some may have been sticking pins in little Jason Gough dolls, I was doing my best George Carlin impression, adding more words to his "Seven you can't say on television." Those environments can be tough to forecast, but that's of no consolation. I hate it when that happens.

The forecast going forward will be better as things come more in to focus.

We'll have to watch for more storms today but starting tomorrow, we dry up and heat up with scant opportunities for rain getting into next week. The big story will be the building heat and humidity, there will be a good amount of both as a second and perhaps longer heat wave is in the forecast.

Today

We're starting off with a lot of low 70s around the area, along with a mostly cloudy sky and a couple of dying showers. Other areas are in the middle and upper 60s, and there is enough humidity to go around.

As we get through this morning, clouds will break up and we'll get into a bit of sunshine. The humidity will hang out through the day, so with the sun helping to cook things up and a little leftover boundary from yesterday sits nearby, we'll have some more storms firing up later this morning into the afternoon. Here's how things look:

A few showers will pop up across the southern Adirondacks by 11ish and will migrate southeast from there into the early afternoon. From there, a few more will fire up and move through during the mid to late afternoon, getting stronger and more numerous as they go. Thus, the best slate of storms in both strength and numbers will be to the south of Albany as the day goes on. That said, everyone will have a shot today so if you're out and about, just keep your eyes on the skies. I will be on the golf course and will lead by example. If you hear thunder, get inside.

Some of these storms will be open for business and I'd not be at all surprised to have a few warnings this afternoon. Wind and heavy rain will be the culprits. For more on severe weather, what it is and how to stay safe, I invite you to check out my Severe Threats and Safety page here!

Things will settle down tonight, and we'll have a nice mild evening and overnight. The humidity will still be here with lows in the 60s to 70.

This Weekend

Cliff's Notes version: much quieter. Warmer. Less humid.

We'll have lots of sunshine tomorrow and although the day will start off on the muggy side, dewpoints will slowly fall from the middle 60s to the upper 50s as we get into the afternoon. Highs will be in the 80s with perhaps a stray 90. Speaking of 90...

A string of them look to start on Sunday. It'll be a day with a few scattered clouds, perhaps an isolated shower or 2 in the Adirondacks but nothing of any consequence. Highs will be in the 80s to 90 degrees.

Next Week

We will be into the first full week of July and it'll surely feel like it. Temperatures will stay in the 80s and low 90s for highs with a few isolated, pop-up showers and thunderstorms. As of now, our best day for those looks to be Wednesday but even then, there won't be many.

Beyond Wednesday, we look to get even warmer as most of the country roasts. We are looking at a good 5+ straight days of 90s, which will eclipse June's 4.

Again, keep alert this afternoon especially from Albany south. I'll have updates as needed on my Facebook and Twitter pages.

Have a great day!
