Severe weather possible in Alabama today - AL.com

Severe storms will be possible for parts of Alabama starting this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered severe storms are most likely in parts of western Alabama, according to forecasters. The strongest storms could have winds up to 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch in diameter.

The tornado threat is on the low side with today’s storms, according to the weather service.

Forecasters on Wednesday were tracking a cluster of strong to severe storms to the west of the state that could make it to Alabama by midday.

That cluster of storms, or mesoscale convective system (MCS), could approach Alabama’s western border as soon as 1 p.m., according to the weather service.

However, it’s tough to know how far south the storms will travel — and how strong they will be when they make it to Alabama.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center thinks scattered severe storms will be possible for parts of west Alabama, and isolated severe storms will be possible for parts of north and central Alabama.

SPC forecasters have expanded the area in Alabama that could potentially see strong storms as of Wednesday morning, and now it includes more of central Alabama.

The weather service in Birmingham has also adjusted its severe weather outlook and added a slight risk for parts of western Alabama including Tuscaloosa, Hamilton and Demopolis:

Here's a look at the areas most likely to see storms in central Alabama today.

Forecasters in north Alabama are also highlighting the possibility for storms. Today’s storms could affect mainly northwest Alabama, but more of north Alabama has a marginal risk on Thursday:

The bad weather may not make it into south Alabama. The weather service in Mobile said most models show the storms weakening or dissipating as they approach south Alabama. However, there’s a chance a few could hold on and bring thunder and gusty winds to inland counties including Choctaw and Wilcox.

Strong to severe storms will also be possible on Thursday afternoon in north Alabama, according to the weather service in Huntsville, as a front moves through the area. The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk in place for part of that region for Thursday:

Isolated severe storms will be possible for parts of north Alabama on Thursday.

Those storms could also bring damaging winds and hail up to 1 inch in diameter. Again the tornado threat will be low.

Friday looks to be storm-free for most, but rain could return by Saturday for north and central Alabama and last on and off through early next week, according to forecasters.
