Conditions are ripe for heavy rain and squally thunderstorms in upper central North Island on Sunday night and early Saturday morning.

Metservice issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Sunday evening for Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua from 10pm until 5am the following morning.

An active front was moving southeastwards over northern and central North Island with the chance of intense rain which could cause surface flooding in these areas.

These thunderstorms may also bring squally wind gusts of 90-100kph, hail, and frequent lightning.

There was also a low risk of one or two small localised tornados, mainly near the coast, MetService warned.

The thunderstorm activity should ease from the west overnight.

There were severe rain warnings in place for Mt Taranaki and the Tasman District and heavy rain watches in place for Bay of Plenty, Westland, Tararua Range and the Richmond Range on Sunday.

Heading into Easter Monday the weather was not likely to get much better, with showers expected across the North Island.

There was a heavy rain warning in place for Tasman District north of Motueka from Sunday evening through to midday Tuesday.

Between 80mm and 120mm was expected in the area through to early Monday evening.

Most of the South Island should expect some rain on Monday with the east clearing to fine in the evening.

It’s not all dark clouds and rain though.

The southernmost parts of the country looked to fare better with fine weather for most of Monday
