Attempted murder case opened after 20-year-old woman suffers severe burns from liquid thrown on her in parking lot - Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An attempted murder investigation has been opened after an assailant threw an unknown liquid on a woman in a parking lot, leaving her with severe burns.

Honolulu EMS treated the 20-year-old woman and transported her to a hospital in serious condition.

Meanwhile, there’s no suspect in custody.

The attack happened about 9:30 p.m. Friday near the 24 Hour Fitness on Kipapa Drive in Mililani.

Sources tell HNN that the victim was in the 24 Hour Fitness parking lot when she was approached by a man wearing a mask.

He shot at her — but missed. He then threw unknown liquid on her. And fled the scene.

Following the attack, the victim ran back into the gym to seek help.

Honolulu police have not released any officials details on the suspect.

In addition to EMS and police, the Honolulu Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit responded.

Sources say it appears she has chemical burns over most of her body. She was taken to Straub.

On Saturday, security was tight at the Mililani Shopping Center that’s home to the 24 Hour Fitness.

“It’s not that long ago where it was very peaceful. I could leave my doors unlocked,” said Dennis Kim, a neighborhood board member who says crime in the area is a growing concern.

“Recently within the last year we’ve seen a lot of uptick in terms of problems like that,” added Kim.

HPD has yet to comment if the victim was targeted or if it was a random attack.
