- A severe weather outbreak is increasingly likely on Tuesday.
- The highest threat area is from Iowa and Illinois south to Arkansas.
- This threat will be in place over many of the same areas as Friday's outbreak.
Meteorologists are watching for another potential severe weather outbreak as many communities in the Mississippi Valley begin recovery efforts from Friday's destructive and deadly tornado outbreak.
A potent winter storm arriving from the West Coast will enable the development of thunderstorms before sweeping northeastward across the Plains and into the Great Lakes by Wednesday.
Severe thunderstorms are once again expected from parts of Iowa and Illinois southward to Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. Some cities in the greatest threat of severe storms include St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock and Davenport, Iowa.
Storms will initially develop Tuesday afternoon and evening across sections of the midwestern Cornbelt and into the Plains, then sweep eastward through the remainder of the day and likely into the evening.
NOAA's Storm Prediction Center said, "a period of sustained, long track discrete supercell development may be possible," in their Saturday morning discussion.
This winter storm will also likely produce heavy snow and blizzard conditions across the Northern Plains and far Upper Midwest. For more on the wintry side of this storm, please read our forecast here.
Details will become available as we get closer to Tuesday.
A Classic, Familiar Severe Weather Setup
Aloft, a strong, dynamic jet stream will roar overhead from the Southwest to the Plains providing strong wind shear for thunderstorms that do form.
At the surface, moisture will once again return to the Mississippi and Ohio valleys as the strong low pressure system pivots from the Rockies toward the Upper Midwest.
If this pattern is familiar, this is almost the exact same configuration as the one that brought dozens of tornadoes to the region on Friday.
