Cold front to trigger flash flood, severe storm threats in Midwest, Northeast through Friday - Fox Weather

A cold front sliding into the Midwest will spawn the development of heavy rain and thunderstorms across the region on Thursday before the threat expands into the Northeast on Friday.

The same front brought severe storms with damaging winds to parts of Michigan on Wednesday where a 17-year-old driver was killed by a tree branch that fell onto his car.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the heaviest rainfall Thursday is likely to occur from the mid-Mississippi Valley and Ohio valleys to the interior Northeast. Flash flooding is possible in these areas, especially in locations that are soaked by repeated rounds of downpours.

Those repeated downpours drenched St. Louis with 4.32 inches of rain on Wednesday, ranking as the city's second-wettest August day on record behind only Aug. 20, 1915, when 6.85 inches of rain fell. It's barely been a week since St. Louis saw its all-time wettest day of any month last Tuesday, July 26, when 8.64 inches of rain triggered a historic flood emergency.

Friday flood threat as cold front stalls

The Midwest cold front is expected to stall out on Friday, allowing for additional heavy rainfall to impact portions of the eastern U.S.

FOX Weather meteorologists say flash flooding is a growing concern from portions of the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians to the mid-Atlantic, and again especially in areas where the ground is already saturated after Thursday's rainfall.

Severe storm threat Thursday brings potential for damaging wind

While widespread severe weather is not expected, there could be a few severe storms Thursday from the Ohio Valley to northern New England. Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat from any severe thunderstorms in these regions.

"As we head into this afternoon, with that daytime heating in places like western Kentucky toward places like Louisville, is where we'll see some of that action kick up," said FOX Weather meteorologist Michael Estime. "And then, unfortunately, that energy heading right back into parts of eastern Kentucky, which has been soaked over the past week."

An isolated severe storm with gusty winds also can't be ruled out Friday over parts of Virginia and Maryland.
