Severe Weather Threat Continues in Midwest, East into Midweek | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com - The Weather Channel

  • Severe storms could impact parts of the Midwest and East through Thursday.
  • Strong tornadoes are possible in the upper Midwest on Wednesday.
  • This comes on the heels of Monday's pair of derechos.

Rounds of severe storms will persist in parts of the Midwest and East through midweek, including a heightened tornado threat in the upper Midwest on Wednesday.

The upcoming severe weather follows on the heels of a pair of derechos that caused widespread wind damage in parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and central Appalachians on Monday.

Derechos are thunderstorm complexes that produce concentrated wind damage and/or high wind reports over a distance of at least 250 miles. They are most common in summer, but it's unusual to have two of them in one day.

The first derecho tracked from southeast Indiana into southern Ohio and West Virginia. That was followed by a second one that developed in northeast Illinois and southeast Wisconsin and tracked toward southern Michigan, northern Indiana and northern and central Ohio.

Wind gusts up to 84 mph and 98 mph were clocked in Chicago and Fort Wayne, Indiana, respectively, from the second derecho.

The severe threat will continue Wednesday, as the tornado threat will increase in the upper Midwest as a cold front tracks into hot, humid air.

An area from northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota into much of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has the greatest chance of seeing supercell thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes, very large hail and wind damage. It's possible there could be a strong tornado or two.

Isolated severe storms could also affect parts of the Southeast, mid-Atlantic and interior Northeast, with wind damage being the biggest concern in those areas.

Severe storms with damaging winds could affect areas from western New York southward into the central Appalachians. An isolated tornado or two is also possible.
