Energy moving out of the High Plains and Great Lakes Monday and Tuesday will become our next severe weather threat in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. With another risk of storms, comes the threat of heavy rain and potential for flash flooding. The timing for this will be a few showers on Tuesday but mostly Wednesday afternoon and evening.
We have a lower level severe weather threat on Wednesday stretching from Maine through Kentucky.
We will see a few showers on Tuesday afternoon and evening along the same warm-front (red). Most of these will be sub-severe but bring in the humid and hot weather, setting the stage for storm development on Wednesday
Thanks to the warm front that moved through Tuesday afternoon and evening, the stage is set Wednesday for the cold front (blue) to tap into and create severe storms through the afternoon hours. Storms will first develop through Ohio and Kentucky.
By mid-afternoon, strong severe storms will be a focus into New England and New York too with heavy rain and damaging winds possible.
We will be seeing a few lingering storms through Appalachia on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile widespread heavy rain will be the concern Wednesday evening through the Tri-State (CT/NJ/NY) and into southern New England Wednesday night.
As mentioned above, thunderstorms will contain the threat for heavy rain, leading to flash flooding. Soils across the Ohio River Valley are pretty saturated so additional rain could lead to a fast rise of water in those locations.
The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has highlighted the risk of excessive rainfall in these locations on Tuesday and Wednesday.
