N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorm watch posted in 10 counties. Winds up to 65 mph possible. - NJ.com

For the second day in a row, a severe thunderstorm watch has been posted in parts of New Jersey because of the threat of strong storms that could pack damaging winds, drenching rain, large hail and frequent lightning Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

Unlike Wednesday’s watch, which included only a few counties in northern New Jersey, the thunderstorm watch issued by the National Weather Service shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday is focused on the southern region of the state, along with the Jersey Shore.

The watch is effective until 9 p.m. Thursday and covers these 10 counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem.

UPDATE: At about 5:55 p.m., the thunderstorm watch was lifted for Mercer and Monmouth counties, but is continuing through 9 p.m. in the other eight counties.

A watch is not as urgent as a warning, but it indicates conditions are favorable for severe weather to break out.

Severe thunderstorm watch vs warning

When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued, people should be aware of the possibility of strong storms on the way. A warning is more urgent than a watch.National Weather Service

On Wednesday, most of the stormy weather was confined to the northern region of the state, with five counties in that area placed under a severe thunderstorm watch. The strongest storms today are expected to take aim at southern New Jersey, along with Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania.

However, forecasters say strong thunderstorms could still hit other parts of the region.

Flash flooding is a concern today because some areas of New Jersey are already saturated from the 1 to 2 inches of rain that fell in Wednesday night’s showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters from the national Storm Prediction Center say another 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall today, with isolated pockets of as much as 3 to 4 inches in places that get hit with repeated rounds of heavy rain.

NJ weather thunderstorm forecast

Strong thunderstorms, damaging winds and large hail could sweep across New Jersey in the afternoon and evening on Thursday, June 2, 2022. Forecasters say the risk of severe storms is higher in the southern half of New Jersey than in the northern half, but strong storms could still develop in any area.Storm Prediction Center

In a hazardous weather outlook issued Thursday morning, the New York regional office of the National Weather Service said “heavy downpours this afternoon and evening may produce localized minor urban and poor drainage flooding, with isolated flash flooding possible” in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties.

Early Thursday afternoon, heavy downpours in Bergen County prompted the weather service to issue a flood advisory because of minor flooding on some streets and low-lying areas. The advisory is active until 2:45 p.m.

Latest flood alerts

  • A flash flood warning has been issued for northwestern Bergen County and eastern Passaic County, effective from 3:35 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. because of heavy rain that has been falling this afternoon. “Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area,” the warning says. “Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”
  • A new flood advisory has been issued for Bergen and Passaic counties, effective from 3:10 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday because of heavy rain that can cause urban street flooding and small stream flooding.
  • A flood watch has been issued for Camden, Gloucester, Mercer and northwestern Burlington counties, effective from 3:10 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The weather service says flash flooding may occur in those areas along rivers, streams, creeks, “other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” and on streets with poor drainage or clogged storm drains.
