Slight risk for severe storms late Tuesday in Northeast Ohio, National Weather Service warns - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio-- There is a slight risk for severe storms, which could include large hail and high winds, beginning later Tuesday in Northeast Ohio, according to the National Weather Service.

The chances of severe weather are low for Greater Cleveland, but they are higher in the Toledo area in Northwest Ohio. The storm is expected to arrive in Northwest Ohio as early as 7 or 8 p.m.

There is a possibility it could bring large hail and powerful winds up to 60 mph, according to the NWS.

The storm will move closer to Cleveland around 10 p.m. and will hopefully be in a weakened state by then, NWS meteorologist Karen Clark said.

“The main threat tonight would be strong damaging winds (and that could be winds up to 60 mph or so), and the next concern would be some hail up to a quarter-inch in diameter,” Clark said.

A cold front moving through the region is responsible for the possible severe weather, Clark said.

Clark and the NWS recommend that residents secure loose outdoor items, such as trash cans and flags. They should also watch out for any later warnings from the NWS, and stay indoors during the storm.

“Fortunately, at the time of night, a lot of people will already be inside,” Clark said. ”But if you do get some type of severe weather warning, they need to move indoors while the storms move through.”

Any precipitation will end by early morning, around 3 a.m. There will be slightly cooler and drier air in Greater Cleveland on Wednesday.
