Upstate NY fall foliage report: Adirondacks arriving at peak or near-peak colors this weekend - newyorkupstate.com

We are fully into fall and about to turn the corner into October. Today brings us the latest Upstate New York fall foliage report by I LOVE NY, the state’s tourism website.

This fourth foliage map shows where spotters around the region predict the percentage of autumn leaves we will see during the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 5, 2021.

Experts said if we had continued a path of warm, wet weather, this year’s colors might be less than exciting, but a dry spell and a drop in temperature could bring us some fall brilliance. This week’s foliage reports change almost all across the state with a large swath of peak or near peak colors in the Adirondack Mountains and smaller spots of near peak changes for the Catskills and Northern New York.

Lake Placid leads the charge with more than 90 percent color change with red and orange leaves dominating the landscape with dots of yellow and green. Spotters in Tupper Lake report 85 percent peak foliage colors filled with delicious hues of buttercup, mustard, orange soda, yellow cheddar, ginger, bittersweet, rhubarb, raspberry, and paprika.

The tourism center recommends that travelers seeking great views should check out the Tupper Lake Triad of Mount Arab, Goodman Mountain, and Coney Mountain for relatively easy climbs for beautiful vistas.

Elsewhere in Upstate New York, colors seem to be taking their sweet time with many spots slowly climbing to their midpoint with around 20-30 percent color change. In Central New York, Oswego County reports the most change with 45 percent peak colors in Oswego, making for a wonderful fall backdrop for this weekend’s Pumpkin Festival.

With heightened rates of Covid-19 cases, the tourism website urges travelers to follow all Covid safety guidelines while leaf peeping this season and embarking on seasonal excursions like fall festivals and foliage train rides. Checking ahead to make sure attractions are open and available is also recommended.
