Rams Make Their Mark in Day Two of Championships at the Peak - CSURams.com

gemerlapbulan.blogspot.com
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Twenty personal records including nine top-20 all-time Colorado State marks highlighted the Rams Friday in Day two of the Championships at the Peak event that concludes Saturday inside the Cadet Field House.

The highest – literally – mark that occurred was in the pole vault with Celyn Stermer leaving her previous No. 5 school mark for the second-best in school history. Stermer, a sophomore from Seattle, vaulted 13'1.5'', improving her previous mark by almost half a foot.

Possibly punching her ticket to the NCAA Championships was Ashton Hallsted in the weight throw if it holds through other conference championship competition across the country. The senior from Casper, Wyo. tossed it 69'1.25'', increasing her PR by 1.75'' and putting herself in sole position of fourth all-time in the green uniform. The distance stands at No. 16 on the indoor performance list, which would be the last spot to receive an invite to Fayetteville, Ark. for the national meet.

Moving onto Saturday's finals on the track was Lauren Gale in the 400-meter race and Janyah Jasper in the 200. Gale clocked the third-best time in prelims at 53.69 and will go up against an All-Pac 12 final with five USC runners along with an Arizona Wildcat and Stanford Cardinal. Jasper, a true freshman, registered the fourth-best preliminary time at 24.84 and will go up against USC, Wichita State, UNLV, Stanford and Arizona State. She also narrowly missed qualifying in the 60m with the 10th-best time in CSU history.

Three Rams advancing to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles was the brightest spot on the men's side in addition to action in the 200 and 400. Finishing fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively, was Germain Barnes, Liam Mather and Kamal-Craig Golaube. Clocking PRs and moving up the CSU record book was Barnes (8.00, T-8th) and Mather (8.01, 10th). They all will toe the blocks with a pair of Sun Devils, Shockers and an Air Force hurdler tomorrow.

Barnes made his presence felt again in the 200, finishing third with a time of 21.70, shaving a mere .01 seconds off his No. 9 all-time mark that he still holds. Joining him in Saturday's final will be Kelley Stephens who finished sixth in the prelims at 21.74, PRing by .05 and moving up to a share of 11th in CSU History.

In the 400, Tom Willems and DeVon Washington obtained the third and fourth seed going into the finals, while the latter improved his PR by .38 seconds to move into the top-10 record book at No. 9 with a time of 48.10.

The first event on Saturday is the men's shot put at 10 a.m. with track events commences at 1 p.m.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On Day Two…
"We saw a lot of PRs and student-athletes getting into finals. The vault and weight throw were highlight events for sure in addition to the 400m and hurdle group. They are in a pretty good position going into the last day. On the flip side, we had some athletes overwhelmed by the competition, but at least now they have that under their belt. Tomorrow, I look forward to not PR watching and seeing our student-athletes compete hard."

On heptathlon and team scores…
"[Eric] Lundgren was in good position to score in the heptathlon, but his Achilles was just bothering him too much to go. We were missing two other heptathletes as well so that hurts us in the team score, but every team has their issues. We also did not compete in middle and long distance. The goal going in wasn't necessary focused on team score, but improvement individually."
