Severe storm survey: Up to 95 mph winds in Northern Michigan storms - MLive.com

Three rounds of thunderstorms damaged northern Lower Michigan this past weekend. The storm survey has been completed by the National Weather Service, with findings of up to 95 mph wind gusts.

No tornado damage was detected, and all of the damage was deemed straight-line winds. Straight-line wind damage can be worse than weak tornado damage because a line of storms affects a larger area than a small tornado.

The first line of severe storms hit the Onaway area of northeast Lower Michigan Saturday morning. Damage occurred at the Onaway State Park Campground. One person had three broken ribs from being hit by storm damage.

A more potent line of severe thunderstorms moved through a stretch from Petoskey and Harbor Springs to Indian River Saturday afternoon. Significant damage occurred around the Petoskey area.

Sunday morning, July 19, brought a larger area of severe thunderstorms with two concentrated areas of damage.

The Cheboygan area was hit with storms generating 70 mph to 80 mph wind gusts. Crawford and Oscoda Counties probably had the strongest winds with a swath of 75 mph to 95 mph winds. The Luzerne, MI area was hit hardest in the Oscoda County storms.

These storm segments were called straight-line wind events, and not officially a derecho. A derecho needs to continue for a long time across hundreds of miles and several states. These storms lasted at peak intensity for just a few hours.

Here’s the radar imagery from the Sunday morning line of severe storms.

But if you are in the heart of the most severe weather, it doesn’t matter if it’s a derecho, a tornado or just straight-line winds. It’s all scary. Jen Novellino and her husband Kevin were in their fifth wheel camper when the probable 95 mph winds battered it. They have been through two hurricanes in the Florida Keys, and said this was more scary for several minutes.
