Excessive heat, severe weather risk returns for a second day - WRAL.com

— Temperatures will soar again Tuesday, with a heat index ranging from 105 to 109 degrees at its peak.

A heat advisory is in effect for the entire viewing area from noon until 9 p.m. In Raleigh, temperatures will rise into the upper 90s, but it could feel as hot as 109 degrees.

Similar to Monday, an excessive heat warning is in effect for counties along the Interstate 95 corridor, including Cumberland, Edgecombe, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Nash, Sampson, Scotland, Wayne and Wilson. There, heat index values could exceed 110 degrees.

Heat Index

There is also a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, including a potential for damaging winds, small hail and heavy rain.

Tuesday morning will start off sunny. After lunch, showers will start to roll into the area. The majority of storms will be in the towards the north.

Raleigh Temperature Tracker

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said the uncomfortably hot weather will continue all week, with heat advisories likely each day. Even if high temperatures fall to the lower 90s later this week, the heat index will make it feel much warmer than it is.

As the heat and humidity builds day by day, the impact on the body increases, as does the risk for heat-related illness.

This week will be above normal for this time of the year in central North Carolina. When the heat index – or what the heat plus humidity really make it feel like – rises above 105 as it is expected to this week, sunstroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion are likely, and heatstroke is possible with prolonged exposure or physical activity.

Here are some general heat safety tips:

  • Slow down. Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activity.
  • Dress for summer. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that reflects heat.
  • Put less fuel on your inner fires. Foods, including proteins, that increase metabolic heat production also increase water loss.
  • Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Spend more time in air-conditioned places.
  • Don't get too much sun.
