The record was set at 12:32 pm PT June 29, surpassing the previous record of 11.932 GW reached June 17, the ISO reported June 30.

"With the sun angles the steepest on June 21 each year, we continue to see solar peaks achieved as additional resources are added to the system," Cal-ISO spokeswoman Anne Gonzales said July 1.

Cal-ISO solar generation output reached 127.155 GWh/day on June 29, the highest level so far this year and 28% higher than the three-year June average, according to ISO data. However, actual solar generation came in 1% below the forecast for June 29.

With more cheap solar generation, wholesale power prices dropped.

Real-time locational marginal prices during the hour the record was set were about $19.25/MWh, about 16% lower than the previous 7-day average, according to ISO data.

The SP15 on-peak real-time price of $15.40/MWh for June 29 was 41% lower than the average on-peak real-time price for the month, according to ISO data. June on-peak real-time prices have already been weak, averaging $26.10/MWh, a decrease of 38% year on year.

ISO solar is forecast to reach 11.41 GW July 2, 11.428 GW July 3, 11.503 GW July 4 and 11.534 GW July 5, according to Cal-ISO data.

Cal-ISO solar trend

Cal-ISO solar generation output has more than doubled in the last five years to average 4.617 GW in June, compared to 2.221 GW in June 2015, according to ISO data.

Solar generation has accounted for 14.7% of the total ISO fuel mix for the first half of 2020, up 1 percentage point from the same timeframe a year ago and more than double the level from five years ago, according to ISO data.

Solar generation added 2.025 GW of capacity to the Cal-ISO grid in 2019, according to data from the ISO grid generation queue.

The queue includes 1.649 GW of solar generation with 2020 on-line dates and executed interconnection agreements, according to ISO data. That number jumps to 5.494 GW for 2021 and 4.592 GW in 2022, according to ISO data.
