Duke to activate severe weather and emergency conditions policy Sunday due to forecast of snow, ice accumulation - Duke Chronicle

Duke University and Duke University Health System will activate the severe weather and emergency conditions policy from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday due to the forecast of snow and ice accumulation, per a Saturday evening DukeAlert.

Durham will go under a winter storm warning at midnight Sunday, which will last the entire day. A warning means that there is heavy mixed precipitation expected, including up to two inches of snow and 0.25 inches of ice.

Wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour are also expected Sunday afternoon, which could lead to downed trees, fallen limbs and power outages, per the DukeAlert. Work crews have pretreated roads, walkways and building entrances today and will be on-site early Sunday to address any problem areas on campus.

All staff deemed to be in essential service positions, including those working remotely, should report to work or remain at work while the policy is in effect. All staff in “delayed service” positions should not report to work or remain at work when the policy is in effect.

“Every effort will be made” to continue the C1 bus and Swift shuttles, weather permitting. Members of the community should monitor Duke Transloc for real-time transit updates.

The COVID-19 surveillance test site for students, faculty and staff will remain open as scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and during regular hours on Monday. However, certain Duke Health clinics may delay opening or close based on local conditions. The Duke Health website will regularly update the status of clinics.

The top level of parking garages will be closed. Essential service staff are encouraged to use parking garages when possible to allow crews to treat and clear parking lots. Duke also advises members of the community to use priority snow/ice clearing routes to travel to and from campus buildings since normal routes may not be cleared or treated.

The DukeAlert encouraged members of the community to check the DukeAlert website for regular nupdates.
