LAKEVIEW, Ore. — A wildfire located northwest of Lakeview was last estimated at 60 acres and "growing rapidly," according to the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP).

The Cougar Peak Fire is located about 15 miles northwest of Lakeview within the Fremont-Winema National Forest's Lakeview Ranger District. The Cottonwood Campground is located just 1.5 miles west of the fire, and was evacuated by the Lake County Sheriff's Office earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

Recreation sites in the area are closed, including Upper Cottonwood and Cottonwood Creek Trailhead.

SCOFMP sad that the fire is burning in mixed conifer and brush, and smoke is highly visible along Highway 140 between Lakeview and Quartz Mountain and along Highway 395. Drivers are advised to use caution in the area due to increased firefighter traffic.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the area until 8 p.m. on Tuesday for strong, gusty winds and low relative humidity. Winds were predicted to be 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 25 to 35 mph and 5 to 10 percent humidity.

"With ongoing extreme fire danger and fuel conditions, even a small spark can quickly grow to become a large wildfire," SCOFMP said in a statement. "Everyone is asked to be careful with anything that could spark a wildfire and to report suspected wildfires immediately by calling 911."
