Today kicks off Severe Weather Awareness week across Wyoming - wyomingnewsnow.tv

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -

Today kicks off Wyoming Severe Weather Awareness week, where each day we will learn about weather situations that occur in the cowboy state. Today’s topic is all about large hail and damaging winds within severe storms.

National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Tim Troutman stated, “When a severe thunderstorm is issued, you should move indoors, stay away from windows. Move to your most safe place in your home because severe thunderstorms can produce wind damage, and on the higher end, that wind damage can be synonymous to a small tornado.”

To be deemed a severe thunderstorm warning it will include either a specific hail size or wind speed. Severe thunderstorm warnings encompass hail larger than the size of a quarter, which is one inch in diameter. It may also include damaging winds exceeding 58 miles an hour.

In the best case scenario, move to a basement and interior room. Troutman stated, “Most vehicles will provide enough protection up to about golf ball size hail, so if this is a thunderstorm that’s really going to be producing really large hail, it’s going to be important to get off the road, move into a sturdier building if you can.”

Tomorrow we will bring you the latest tips about lightning safety, including some facts you may not have heard before. We’ll share a sign that could tell you, when you’re about to be struck by lightning.
