There is now a slight threat of severe weather for all of eastern North Carolina for later this afternoon and evening with a powerful cold front. The main threats are strong gusty winds and possible large hail.
The Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service said the timing for the strongest storms is from roughly 5 to 6 p.m. through about midnight.
Ahead of the storms, southwest winds of 20 to 25 mph with higher gusts are expected, before shifting to the north when the front passes and skies clear off.
An onshore flow is expected to continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with a few spotty showers possible and temperatures at or just below normal.
There is a high risk of rip currents along the south facing beaches from Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke Inlet, and a moderate risk from Oregon Inlet to Cape Hatteras.
