Tuesday, September 5: Goaded on by the formation of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, torrential downpours lashed Telangana this morning. And the capital Hyderabad grappled with particularly heavy rains, prompting authorities to issue a red alert over the city.
After some rains over Hyderabad on Monday night for the second consecutive day, conditions intensified in the wee hours of Tuesday, with many parts registering over 100 mm of rainfall in the span of 2-3 hours. Daytime temperatures dropped to 25.2°C, six degrees below normal, in the past 24 hours.
Old city, Central Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Information Technology Hub Hitec City, Gachibowli and outskirts received the most intense bouts. Chandanagar recorded 102 mm between 8.30 pm on Monday to 5 am Tuesday while Kukatpally and Moosapet received rainfall of 80.5 and 65.5 mm respectively in the duration. Several areas under Ramachandrapuram, Patancheru, Khairatabad, Quthbullapur, Shaikpet and Balanagar received between 40 and 63 mm of rainfall.
Prone as the city is to flooding, the abrupt rains were enough to cause severe waterlogging in the city, especially in its low-lying parts. The inundation, in turn, sparked traffic snarls, throwing life out of gear for Hyderabad residents. And GHMC and DRF personnel had to clear out buses stuck in rainwater at Aramghar and Srinagar and the trees that had fallen in several areas.
The teams continue working towards clearing the water stagnation in the city.
Municipal officials have advised citizens to exercise caution while moving near the manholes, and appealed to stay indoors unless unavoidable. The government has also declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rains, thunderstorms and lightning over Hyderabad for today. Several other Telangana districts, however, will be in for very heavy rains on Tuesday and heavy showers until Thursday, August 7.
Orange alerts have been issued over Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Rajanna Sirsilla, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Janagaon districts of Telangana during the forecast period.
