It’s been a while, but the threat for severe weather has returned for Alabama on Wednesday.
Scattered severe storms will be possible, mainly this afternoon and evening, in the northern half of the state. The southern half of Alabama could also see rain and storms, but widespread severe weather isn’t expected.
Rain and non-severe storms will also be possible for parts of the state during the morning hours today, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong to severe storms are expected to develop later today ahead or along a cold front that will approach the state.
The strongest storms could bring damaging straight-line winds, hail and heavy rain with them.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather for a large part of north Alabama for today. A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
Areas farther to the south and east, including the rest of north Alabama and part of central Alabama, will have a Level 1 severe weather risk and could have to deal with isolated severe storms.
The National Weather Service said the main window for storms for north Alabama could begin around 4 p.m. in the northwest, and they could last until around 9 p.m. in east Alabama. However, forecasters cautioned that confidence in that timing was on the low side as of Wednesday morning.
The front is expected to make it through at least the northern part of the state and could bring slightly cooler and drier air behind it starting on Thursday and into Friday, according to the weather service.
