Severe thunderstorms crossed Lake Michigan last Tuesday. The wind generated by the severe storms caused water levels to bounce up and down many times.
The severe thunderstorms had west wind gusts up to 70 mph on the west Michigan shoreline. The high winds crossing Lake Michigan piled up the water on the Michigan shoreline. Once the line of severe storms moved east of Lake Michigan, the piled up water relaxed and shifted back to the Wisconsin shoreline.
But the wave of water didn’t just make one trip back and forth. The sloshing continued in an enhanced fashion from 9:00 a.m.September 7 to 7:30 a.m. Thursday, September 9.
Here is the water level measured at Ludington, Michigan from September 6 to September 10.
Some of the ups and downs of the Ludington water level were one foot in fluctuation. I found the wave sloshed back and forth approximately 43 times.
Here’s the water level plunging at Menominee, Wisconsin as the severe storms started on the west side of Lake Michigan.
As the wave started at the Wisconsin shoreline, the water level dropped about 1.2 feet at Menominee.
From looking at the Ludington water level, the wave sloshed back and forth, more or less, in about one hour. With Lake Michigan about 60 miles across at Ludington, the round trip made in an hour means a speed of the wave at 120 mph.
Now you know why you can’t outrun a wave in a boat.
