Syracuse, N.Y. -- Summer weather returns to Upstate New York this week, bringing warmer temperatures, higher humidity and frequent chances for thunderstorms.
Rain and storms are in the forecast from today through at least Saturday. Some of today’s storms could be severe, with winds of 60 mph or more.
“The main concern is a batch of scattered thunderstorms that is expected to move through the area this evening through tonight,” the National Weather Service said. “These storms may become strong to severe with damaging winds and heavy rainfall that could produce localized flash flooding.”
Storms could be strong enough to spawn a tornado, the weather service said.
The heaviest rainfall, which could be up to 2 inches, is expected from Yates to Otsego counties, south of the Syracuse area. Given the summer’s heavy rainfall, the weather service said, that much rain could cause ponding of water on roads and flooding of smaller creeks.
Today’s high will be about 80 degrees. While Monday’s high will dip back into the mid 70s, much of Upstate will be back into the low 80s throughout the week and into the weekend. The average high for mid-August is about 75 degrees.
Except for Monday, humidity will rise, too, with most days reaching into the 80-percent range.
All that heat and humidity raises the chances of thunderstorms. The odds of rain and thunderstorms will be 30% to 40% every day this week.
