Places to stay for peak leaf peeping - Hudson Valley - Albany Times Union

gemerlapbulan.blogspot.com

While the calendar may still read as summer, talk around town suggests that fall is nary upon us. Even pumpkin spice, warm autumnal tones and falling leaves are already popping up all over Instagram. We’re not yet ready to wave goodbye to summer, but we are ready to start planning for fall — and the season’s favorite activity: leaf peeping.

We’re spoiled around here in the Hudson Valley with our bounty of maple, ash and beech trees that turn the most exquisite tones of apple red, squash orange, lemon yellow, even plummy purple. Vermont and New Hampshire may boast about their colorful forests, but ever seen the Harlem Valley off Route 22 near Boston Corners, or Minnewaska State Park near Kerhonkson? No need to burn the extra fuel for a drive four hours north.

For the Hudson Valley, peak foliage is expected to hit around October 10th until the 17th. In anticipation of nature’s annual peacocking, we’ve rounded up the coziest rentable cabins and cottages that deliver prime leaf viewing from large-scale windows or by the outdoor firepit, all ideal for a weekend getaway or mid-week excursion to peep the leaves before they disappear.

Nestled near the Ashokan reservoir, the Olive Woods House makes use of its outdoor living as much as its Catskills-chic interiors. The house touts 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms while the grounds offer “a moss-covered gazebo, multiple deck spaces and a fire pit area for roasting marshmallows and star gazing surrounded by seasonal ferns and perennial gardens.” With views of the Catskill Mountains itself, you may even choose to leaf-peep from the comfort of the fire pit.

Built in 1968 and renovated in 2021, tucked behind around Pine Plains, the house is perfectly situated to head to Stissing Mountain or Lafayetteville park for a hike around the changing foliage. In fact, the house is itself at the end of a dirt road in the middle of the woods, so expect to be flooded by a bouquet of colors.
