Delta is a tropical depression as of Saturday morning, and it’s bringing the threat of severe weather to Alabama as it continues to move inland and weaken.
The center of Delta had moved into Mississippi as of 10 a.m. CDT, but rain and storms stretched far to the east and into Alabama.
Rain and storms were moving through the central part of Alabama on Saturday morning, and some of them have been severe.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch for part of south Alabama that will be in effect until 1 p.m. today. (See map above.)
The watch area also includes part of Mississippi and Florida. Forecasters said a “couple of tornadoes” will be possible in those area as rain bands from Delta rotate through the area.
The Alabama counties in the watch are Butler, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw and Escambia.
The watch has been canceled for Monroe, Wilcox, Baldwin, Clarke, Mobile, Washington and Choctaw counties as of 10 a.m.
South Alabama is getting the brunt of the bad weather so far today. The National Weather Service in Mobile has already issued several tornado warnings as of Saturday morning, including one for the Mobile area, which has since expired. A waterspout was seen over Mobile Bay earlier this morning.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather in place for parts of central, south and east Alabama today. The slight risk area has been expanded as of the latest update just before 8 a.m.:
A slight risk means scattered severe storms will be possible.
Much of the rest of the state has a marginal risk (Level 1), which means isolated severe storms will be possible.
In addition to the tornado threat, there is also the potential for heavy rain as the tropical rain bands move through.
All of Alabama could get a least a half-inch of rain through Sunday night, with areas in north Alabama potentially getting 2 to 3 inches, according to the weather service:
Winds will also be breezy, especially in western Alabama.
A wind advisory is in effect for Choctaw, Washington, Clarke, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Butler, Escambia, Mobile and Baldwin counties in southwest Alabama until 1 p.m. today.
Another wind advisory is in effect for the west-central Alabama counties of Pickens, Sumter, Greene, Hale and Marengo until 1 p.m.
Winds could gust up to 35 mph today across the advisory areas, the weather service said.
The remnants of Delta are expected to move away from the state starting on Sunday, but rain could linger into the day. Rain chances are expected to decrease by Sunday night.
