The majority of people who are infected with COVID-19 experience mild symptoms, none at all, or severe infections but make a complete recovery. However, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, there are a good number of people who suffer long-term health damage as a result of an infection. During the National Academy of Medicine's virtual event, "Confronting Urgent Threats to Human Health&Society: Covid-19 and Climate Change," the key member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force listed some of the severe manifestations of the virus that people are experiencing, with many failing to recover.

He revealed a startling fact: that "we are starting to notice as we get more and more experience that there's a considerable degree" of long-term—and often serious—health complications. Here are the ones that he mentioned: Read on, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.

Heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat is also a common complaint of long haulers. According to the highly annotated Long Hauler Symptoms Survey 509 out of 1,537 people reported irregular or erratic heartbeat.

Dr. Fauci's Takeaways

Fauci revealed that long haulers are a priority in terms of COVID research. "We're putting a major study on seeing exactly the extent of this post COVID-19 syndrome," he revealed during his lecture. "The idea of being able to just let this infection go through the community and only be concerned about those in nursing homes clearly is flawed because there are so many people that are generally in the community who are susceptible to severe disease."
