Severe Weather Possible Thursday Afternoon - National Weather Service


There will be a risk for severe storms along a fast-moving cold front Thursday afternoon. Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are the main threats. In addition to the severe threat, winds will gust into the 30 to 45 mph range. These winds will be out of the south ahead of the cold front and from the west behind this cold front. Much colder air will move into the region on Thursday night. Wind chills will range from 5 to 15 above late Thursday night and Friday morning.

Thursday: Severe Storms Possible 

  • What: Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible.
  • Where: West of the Mississippi River from noon to 2 p.m. East of the Mississippi River between 2 and 5 p.m.
  • Impacts: Winds and isolated tornadoes could damage trees, down power lines.
  • ACTION: Stay weather aware! Take shelter when storms approach.

Thursday-Thursday Night: Gusty Winds

  • What: 30 to 45 mph wind gusts. Out of the south prior to the cold front and from the west behind the cold front.
  • Where: Entire area. Strongest gusts west of the Mississippi River.
  • Timing: Thursday and Thursday Night

Thursday Night-Friday Morning: Wind Chills

  • What: Wind chills 5 to 10 above west of the Mississippi River and 10 to 15 above across western Wisconsin.
  • Timing: late Thursday night and Friday morning.
