We’ve known Aaron Rodgers has been dealing with a thumb injury since the Green Bay Packers’ game against the New York Giants. We recently learned it was a broken one. On Sunday, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported its an avulsion fracture in his right thumb.
According to Rapoport, an avulsion fracture is a much more “severe” fracture than previously known. He continued that a severe force ” causes the ligament to rip away from the attachment, taking some bone with it. Essentially, it is a fracture and a torn ligament, resulting in joint instability.” Surgery is almost always the option chosen.
The thumb is a critical ingredient in a quarterback’s success. It plays a vital role in the ability to grip the ball, throw with power and throw with accuracy. In other words, everything a quarterback needs to do to be successful.
Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb, a break more severe than previously known.
Rodgers has been a warrior in fighting through the injury for most of the season. He hasn’t brought it up on his own and information has only slowly been shared over the last couple of weeks.
It’s probably one of the biggest reasons for the Packers’ offensive backslide this season (of course, the turnover at wide receiver and the other on-the-field struggles are big reasons as well). He’s also having one of the worst statistical seasons of his career.
Rodgers got a few extra days off from their last game on Thursday night so we’ll see if that helps at all. They’ll also have a bye in two weeks. However, Green Bay probably needs to win out to have any chance at the playoffs. They play the first-place Philadelphia Eagles this week and need a huge performance from Rodgers if they want any chance at a victory. Who knows if he’s even capable of that given the status of his thumb.
Rodgers has shown extreme toughness playing through this injury and saying very little about it. It would’ve sidelined just about every other quarterback, yet, he’s remained on the field for better or worse.
