A few strong storms may be in the mix for part of Alabama on Saturday, according to forecasters.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather in place across part of south Alabama for Saturday.
A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.
The strongest storms could have damaging wind gusts and heavy rain, and a tornado is not out of the question, according to forecasters.
Rain and a storm or two will also be possible in the rest of Alabama, but severe weather isn’t expected.
The National Weather Service will be watching as a warm front lifts northward from the Gulf and a cold front approaches Alabama from the west late in the day on Saturday. Areas south of the warm front will have the greatest potential to see stronger storms.
The weather service in Mobile said the most likely time for storms -- although this isn’t a sure thing just yet -- will be from around sunset into the overnight hours. Forecasters noted that models still are having issues nailing down the timing of the arrival of storms.
The weather service said forecasters will be able to narrow down the timing differences in the next 24 hours.
The weather should turn drier on Sunday from west to east, and dry conditions are expected for the first part of next week.
However, the next weather system will bring rain chances back to the forecast starting late Tuesday, and there will be the potential for more storms on Wednesday as another front moves through.
As of Saturday the Storm Prediction Center has outlined an enhanced potential for severe weather just to the west of Alabama for Tuesday, so forecasters will be watching trends carefully early next week.
