A new storm system punching into the southern Plains will bring threats of severe thunderstorms and flooding rainfall beginning Thursday as the fall severe weather season rolls on.
This next round of stormy weather follows on the heels of an early-week system that spawned an EF-1 tornado in Jarrell, Texas, Monday night. Law enforcement reported overturned tractor-trailers and cars in a ditch along Interstate 35 just outside the city. The Jarrell Fire Station also suffered roof damage and had doors and windows blown out, according to photos shared by the department. Video from the Jarrell area showed homes that had been damaged as well.

Fall is often considered the second severe weather season because it's the time of year when warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico starts to clash with colder air beginning to infiltrate the U.S. from Canada as we inch closer to winter.
While the FOX Forecast Center is not expecting widespread severe thunderstorms from this next system, a few stronger storms could rumble across the southern Plains Thursday and Friday.
"The setup for this: We have a big dip in the jet stream, and any time you have the jet stream on top of you, that means you have some stormy weather down below," FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin explained. "So it is a perfect setup. A lot of upper-level support here."
Thursday's severe storm threat
As the low-pressure system and its associated cold front sweep into the southern Plains on Thursday, isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible from the Texas Panhandle, southwestern Texas and the Texas Hill Country eastward into southwestern Oklahoma. This includes the cities of Amarillo, Abilene and San Angelo in Texas.
These storms will pose threats of large hail, damaging wind gusts and even a tornado.

Friday's severe storm threat
The low-pressure system will continue tracking eastward on Friday, spawning another risk of isolated severe thunderstorms across southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. This includes Houston, College Station and Beaumont in Texas.
Large hail, damaging wind gusts and a tornado or two are all threats with the strongest storms.

Heavy rain, flash flood threats
As the storm system becomes more organized on Friday, widespread heavy rainfall is expected to develop across the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.
The heavy rain will begin in West Texas on Friday morning, then expand north and eastward into East Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana by Friday evening. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain is expected to fall in many of these areas.

While the rainfall will be beneficial to many communities that are experiencing drought conditions, flash flooding could become a concern if too much rain falls in a short period of time.
YOUR WEATHER FORECAST FOR HALLOWEEN WEEKEND FROM COAST TO GHOST
After drenching the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley, this system and its associated cold front will sweep eastward into the Midwest and South this weekend, bringing a round of heavy rain to those regions and potentially disrupting some early Halloween festivities.
