A storm moving through the Rockies will create a large-scale pattern change that will bring the first significant mountain snow throughout the Intermountain West this weekend.
The snow will start on Saturday across the Cascades and northern Rockies, including Montana and Idaho. At least 6 inches of snow is looking increasingly likely at and above 5,000 feet.
The snow will then spread into the Wasatch Mountains of Utah and the Rockies of Colorado and Wyoming on Sunday. Winter Storm Watches and Warnings have been issued as heavy snow, possibly more than 12 inches, is likely for all the highest mountain ranges.

But some snow is expected across much of Montana and Wyoming, even in the lower elevations as colder air infiltrates the region beneath a dip in the jet stream.

Some snow will even fall in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where snow will first mix with rain Saturday night, then change to mainly snow on Sunday with 1 to 3 inches expected. Snow will mix with rain in Salt Lake City Saturday night and Sunday, with up to an inch of wet snow possible near the Great Salt Lake, but the higher terrain in the city's eastern suburbs could see up to 6 inches of snow.
At the lower elevations in the Intermountain West, temperatures will remain too warm for snow – that includes Denver, where rain and gusty winds can be expected.
Significant autumn storm heads into the northern Plains
The storm gets more ornery as it moves off the Rockies and heads into the northern Plains, bringing a mixture of heavy rain, gusty winds and the possibility of some snow. It could even spawn a few severe thunderstorms by the time it reaches the Midwest late this weekend.
"Once this moisture makes its way over the Rockies, it’s going to tap into some significant moisture that is going to be moving up out of the Gulf of Mexico," FOX Weather meteorologist Jason Frazer said. "In front of this (storm), we’re going to see rain, but behind this system is where we’re going to see a significant amount of snow."
It'll be windy too. As the storm strengthens, high winds will first develop Sunday across the southern Plains, where 30- to 50-mph wind gusts are likely, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
On Monday, the strongest winds will be across the northern Plains. Wind gusts will likely exceed 60 mph in the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.

Given the extremely dry air currently in place, the atmosphere will struggle to bring moisture levels up to a range that would be conducive for widespread severe thunderstorms, meteorologists in the FOX Forecast Center said.
That being said, at least some storms could produce large hail and damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph from Sunday evening into early Monday morning. The primary zone for severe thunderstorms will be from northeastern Kansas to central Minnesota.
(FOX Weather)
Severe weather or not, as much as 3 inches of rain is still expected across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest from Sunday night into Monday.
These areas have been very dry over the past three months, ranging from about 4 to 7 inches of rainfall below average, so this rain will be beneficial.
