Scattered storms moving through parts of the Northeast Tuesday afternoon and evening could turn strong to severe.
Areas from eastern New York State and into central Massachusetts have a slight risk of severe thunderstorms, which is the second out of five levels from the Storm Prediction Center. A marginal risk, which means conditions are borderline, surrounds that and extends into southwestern Maine.
Threats
The main risk is gusty winds that could top 60 mph in the strongest storms, particularly in the slight risk zone.
In addition, hail and possibly a brief tornado are also possible. It appears the slightly more favorable tornado risk area, if one were to happen, is in Massachusetts.
Any of the storms, even ones that aren’t severe, could drop a downpour as they pass.
Timing
Scattered storms will be most likely in eastern New York from mid-afternoon through 6 or 7 p.m. Massachusetts will have its most active weather by late-afternoon in the Berkshires and exiting the central part of the state by about 9 p.m. Southwestern Maine’s stormiest window looks to start by around 10 p.m., ending a few hours later.
