Forecasters expect rain showers to pass eastward across the state Tuesday morning, bringing potentially heavy rain to some areas during the morning commute, before more severe thunderstorms arrive in the afternoon.
The wet weather could begin in the morning, arriving around daybreak in the westernmost areas of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut before pushing east, the National Weather Service said.
Storms could reach Worcester by 8 or 9 a.m. and Boston an hour or two later, Alan Dunham, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Norton, said.
The storms are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds. There is a low risk of an isolated tornado on Tuesday.
In the afternoon, communities further inland could be due for a second batch of storms. After the first round of showers pushes out to sea, a heavier batch of storms could arrive in Central and Western Massachusetts in the afternoon.
The best chance of potentially severe storms this afternoon and evening is in Western Massachusetts, mainly west of Worcester, Dunham said.
“Some of the [morning] showers and storms could be heavy, giving pretty good showers that could impact the morning commute, especially near Boston,” Dunham said. “But the best chance of severe thunderstorms will be this afternoon.”
