There’s a chance of strong thunderstorms with damaging winds in New Jersey on Monday evening, according to the latest forecast.
The northern third of the state is at greatest risk with lesser chances for heavy rain in central and South Jersey, the National Weather Service said.
There’s a hazardous weather outlook for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex counties with forecasters saying scattered severe thunderstorms are possible through Monday night.
Storms are most likely to occur in the evening and likely wind down by 7 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said.
Even if strong thunderstorms develop, the weather service says atmospheric conditions aren’t conducive to excessive rainfall or tornadoes. Only the Wanaque River at the Wanaque Reservoir and the Rockaway River in Boonton are near flood stage as of Monday morning, according to the weather service.
In general, expect a sunny day with highs in the low to mid 80s. Aside from the rain threats, it’ll be a mostly cloudy overnight with lows in the 60s.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and highs reaching the low 80s. There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday but it stays warm with highs in the upper 80s.
The forecast beyond from Thursday on is highly uncertain, though forecasters are preliminarily calling for chances of showers on Thursday and Friday.
