After about 10 hours of searching, rescuers found the body of a 49-year-old woman near South Boulder Peak.
First responders were notified about 1:45 p.m. Monday that family members were in the area of South Mesa Trail searching for the female relative who they were concerned about. The woman may have been experiencing a physical health and/or mental health issue, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carrie Haverfield said Monday.
The woman’s car was parked in the 200 block of Eldorado Springs Drive, according to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue crews began looking for the missing woman by foot and using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Just before midnight, the woman was found in a remote location near South Boulder Peak, the release said.
The body was found in steep and rugged terrain that was not near a mapped trail, Haverfield said Tuesday. It is not known how far the body was from the nearest trail.
“We would like to recognize the (Open Space and Mountain Parks) ranger who went above and beyond by hiking and searching in very difficult terrain, in the dark, and was able to locate the victim,” the release said.
Efforts to recover the body may take several days, depending on weather conditions and resource availability, the release said, and officials may temporarily close areas and trails to help with recovery.
Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Boulder Emergency Squad, Front Range Rescue Dogs and victim’s advocates from the sheriff’s office also assisted in the search, the release said. Haverfield did not know the number of people who assisted in the recovery because the incident is still active.
Haverfield did not know the hometown of the victim’s family.
The Boulder County Coroner’s office will work to identify the woman and to determine the cause and manner of death. No foul play is suspected.
