MIDWAY — The Lone Peak golf team held off a charge by Davis to capture its 10th state golf title, seventh in the last eight years, with a four-stroke win Tuesday at the 6A golf championship at Soldier Hollow Golf Course.
The Knights had begun the day 10 shots ahead of the Darts, but midway through the round, the Darts had overtaken them. However, some key birdies down the stretch by the Knights kept Davis from repeating its 2017 title when it edged the Knights for the state title.
Lone Peak finished with a 14-under-par 562 total on the Gold Course after coming in at 5-under 283 on Tuesday. The Darts, under first-year coach Daniel Summerhays, were 11-under par on the day after being 1-over the previous day.
“We had a good day and were able to pull it together — we’re excited,” said second-year coach Chad Christofferson. “Davis played great today, but we just played better.”
Corner Canyon’s Cayson Wright won medalist honors after shooting his second straight 69 as his 138 total edged Layton’s Tysen Diaz and Lone Peak’s Brandon Ashworth by one shot.
Diaz led after the first day with a 65, but fell back with an early double-bogey. He got back into a tie for the lead with a birdie-2 at No. 17, but a bogey at No. 18 left him a shot behind and out of a playoff.
McKay Cook led the Davis comeback with a 7-under 65 and finished at 140 along with teammate Cole Cipriano, Josh Savage of Pleasant Grove, Carter Frisby of Skyridge and Preston Wallace of Davis.
Jordan’s Preston Cheney finished at 141, while two Lone Peak golfers, senior Evan Lawrence and sophomore Cooper Jones, came in at 142.
Thanks to live scoring provided by the Utah Section PGA, followers of the tourney knew that the Darts had taken the lead with approximately six holes left. But Ashworth, the Knights’ No. 5 golfer, birdied three of the final four holes, Lawrence birdied two of the final four, Parker Reese, birdied three of the last six and Gunnar Christofferson had four birdies on the back nine. Reese and Christofferson tied at even-par 144.
Other members of the winning Lone Peak team were junior Jack Arnold at 146 and junior Preston Smithson at 155.
Corner Canyon finished third overall at 584, followed by Layton at 585 and Skyridge at 602.
