A storm system will move across Colorado on Sunday causing high winds near the Cameron Peak fire and the chance of a few inches of snow in the mountains.
The high winds and continued dry conditions create a high probability of increased fire activity Sunday. Smoke could drift into the Denver area in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.
“Periods of moderate to heavy smoke will be also possible for northern parts of the Colorado Front Range region,” according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “The heaviest smoke is most likely for Larimer and Weld counties, including Ft. Collins and Greeley due to smoke transported from wildfires in Colorado and Wyoming. Lighter smoke is possible further south in the Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs areas, though brief periods of heavier smoke will remain possible.”
Wind gusts up to 50 mph could blast Boulder, Estes Park and Fort Collins, according to the weather service. Winds in the mountains could reach 65 mph.
Mountain areas could receive between 1 and 3 inches of snow, according to the weather service.
Firefighters battling the Cameron Peak Fire say the increased winds will be a challenge for them on Sunday. The fire grew 675 acres since Saturday to 134,559 acres — about 210 square miles. The fire was 47% contained as of Saturday night, fire officials said.
Firefighters will continue to focus their efforts on protecting the Colorado State University Mountain Campus and the Pingree Park community.
A storm system will move across Colorado today. Light snow showers will develop in mountains, with a few rain showers over the NE plains. Cooler but continued dry and windy conditions will produce critical fire danger for the foothills and plains. #cowx pic.twitter.com/2R49DPSIXQ
