Due to the combined fire activity of both the Cameron Peak Fire in northwest Larimer County and the Mullen Fire in southern Wyoming, which recently crossed the Colorado/Wyoming border near Jackson County, the closure order for the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest has expanded, according to a release from the United States Forest Service.

The Cameron Peak Fire, which has been burning since August, currently stands as Colorado’s third-largest wildfire at 125,006 acres, and is at 30% containment.

The Mullen Fire, which crossed the border from Colorado into Wyoming Wednesday, according to Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Joe Shellhammer during the live Wednesday night update, is currently at 117,420 acres.

According to the USFS release, the general area now closed is all National Forest System lands west of the National Forest Boundary (except the lower Poudre Canyon), east of the Colorado State Forest State Park, south of the Colorado state line and north of Rocky Mountain National Park. More information about updated closure information can be found at the USFS website.

The update added that this closure will impact numerous recreation sites, including many trails and trailheads, boating and fishing sites and some picnic sites, all of which are noted on the USFS website. Camping and hunting has also been affected by this closure, with all campgrounds inside and outside the area remaining closed and impacting numerous dispersed areas used for hunting.

“This closure is in place for public safety and to support firefighting efforts,” the release said. “These areas are very popular with recreationists but also, in many cases, remote. Roads and trails are greatly interconnected. If evacuations are necessary, it can be difficult to reach people and can take emergency responders a great deal of time to make sure everyone is out safely.”
