N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorms could bring hail, wind to state Monday night - NJ.com

The National Weather Service warned of storms late Monday into early Tuesday in portions of New Jersey, with flooding and hail possible.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in place until 1 a.m. for Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Warren counties, according to the weather service.

The weather service also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Northeastern Hunterdon County, Morris County, Eastern Warren County, and northwestern Somerset County until 10 p.m.

“In addition to large hail and damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” the weather service said.

A flash flood warning is also active until 1:15 a.m. for parts of Hunterdon, Morris and Warren counties, where 1 to 2 inches of rain has already been reported, according to the weather service.

The weather agency issues a severe thunderstorm watch when severe thunderstorms are possible around the area, but it is less urgent alert than a warning, which means storms are occurring or imminent.

Communities around New Jersey are continuing to recover from the remnants of Ida, which killed at least 30 people in the state and slammed the region with heavy flooding, and tornadoes.
