Silver Peak, Netskope Forge SASE Shield Against Threats - SDxCentral

Silver Peak just got a little SASE-er this week thanks to a new integration with cloud-security vendor Netskope.

Under the partnership, Silver Peak customers can now take advantage of Netskope’s Security Cloud Services to extend a secure access service edge (SASE) architecture across their network.

The partnership underpins Netskope’s overall stagey in the SASE space. Rather than attempting to develop or acquire its own SD-WAN capabilities, the company has focused on cloud-delivered security while developing integrations with popular SD-WAN services.

While SASE ties together elements of SD-WAN, cloud-managed security, and edge compute, it isn’t strictly necessary for them to come from a single vendor, and this is the route Netskope has taken through its integration with Silver Peak.

The integration, which is the first to take advantage of Silver Peak’s new service orchestration functionality, works by automatically configuring the necessary tunnels and policies to route cloud application traffic to Netskope’s NewEdge points of presence (PoPs).

Netskope claims these PoPs are among the most “well connected” with the most data centers and network adjacencies of any other security vendor. “Besides FAANG [Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google], the cloud guys, we’re the largest, most interconnected security infrastructure on the internet,” said Joe DePalo, SVP of platform engineering and operations at Netskope, in an earlier interview with SDxCentral.

Once traffic reaches these PoPs, Netskope executes a series of security functions including cloud-based firewalls, cloud-access security broker, and zero-trust network access depending on where the traffic is going and the threat posture of the user.

According to Silver Peak, the SASE architecture eliminates the need to backhaul application traffic to a centralized corporate data center for verification. This is especially important as the mix of enterprise traffic continues to shift away from internal applications to software-as-a-service platforms, like Office 365, where backhauling traffic only serves to add latency and degrade the user experience, the companies claim.

“Our joint WAN edge solution will enable enterprises to transform how they secure applications, users, and IT infrastructure by delivering consistent network and security policy enforcement without compromise,” said Fraser Street, head of WAN technical alliances at Aruba, adding that as more companies shift to remote work, these capabilities are becoming even more important.

Hewlett Package Enterprise acquired Silver Peak last summer in a deal valued at $925 million. The elements of the SD-WAN have since been integrated into Aruba Networks, which itself was acquired by HPE in 2015.

Existing customers using both Netskope’s NewEdge and Silver Peak SD-WAN platforms can now enable the integration at no additional charge.
